Isn’t Libby such a jerk? For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, go read my last post where I introduce you to my inner critic Libby. I had my first painting/art rut or block, or whatever you want to call it, but basically I felt completely unmotivated to create, Libby was telling me that my self taught created art sucked, and I just didn’t want to do anything but lay on the couch, watch Netflix, and read a book. Now this book, CHANGED EVERYTHING! Also I thoroughly enjoyed it! Dying to know what book I’m talking about? It’s “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk” by Danielle Krysa.
Now I can’t stress this enough but you need to go out and BUY THIS BOOK NOW! Ok fine you can buy it on Amazon like I did but seriously everyone or every creative needs this book in their life. This book arrived about three days into my art rut, right about the time when Libby was asking me why I was even creating because my self taught ways aren’t that impressive and not many people like abstract art so I should just give it up. I know I’m actually really not a fan of Libby, that’s why I personally shelled out for her all expense paid trip to Hawaii for an extended period of time. If she comes back early I don’t know what I’ll do, maybe next time I’ll send her to the Maldives but let me tell you I’ll need a raise if that is going to happen.
Anyways on with the book, I found this because I had started listening to Danielle’s podcast “Art For Your Ear” and it quickly became my new obsession. I really found myself craving to become more serious about putting my art out there and absorbing each artist’s story, then you know Libby came along and had a field day. I decided to purchase the book due to the fact I loved her podcast so much I figured I would love the book as well and let me tell you I was right!
I think what I love the most about this book is the voice of Danielle Krysa, she is basically your new best friend or personal cheerleader. Sympathetic, wise, and understanding, she’s been there and helps lift the curtain to let us know that basically every other creative professional has also been there and continues to hear from their inner critic from time to time. Danielle also provides really unique perspectives, ideas, and solutions to silence that rude, mean, jerk of an inner critic. I think my favorite suggestion she provides is to do an ugly art night with friends. Basically you invite friends over, have your beverage of choice (hello Sauvignon Blanc) and have a competition to see who can make the ugliest piece of art. Literally love this idea, hey local friends if anyone is interested in doing this hit me up!
This book was there for me when I needed it and honestly was a joy to read from someone who was never the biggest reader and preferred exploring over sitting still to read. Everyone that knows me personally knows that it’s a pretty big deal when I love a book and choose to spend my free time sitting down and reading. If you do get this book, my favorite chapter is Failure Leads To Genius. Everything Danielle said in this chapter really resonated with me and I found myself thinking YASSS! But to be honest this whole book is just perfection and was everything I needed so seriously go buy it, you won’t regret it. I definitely will be purchasing Danielle’s other book “Creative Block” soon especially since I experienced my first rut/block last month. Let me know in the comments if you are a Danielle Krysa fan (I mean how can you not be) and if you’ve read this book.
P.S How funny is this photo? When I was photographing my artwork last weekend, Luna was totally up for a photoshoot so I let my creative imagination go wild.
