Lately I’ve been all about the watercolor. Now I know if you follow me on social media you might think that’s strange because I tweet all the time how watercolor is the bane of my existence. Now don’t get me wrong it still is, but that’s exactly why I have been painting with the medium a lot recently. Plus paper is way easier to store than canvases considering with all the canvases I’m storing in my tiny apartment I’m running out of room fast *cough cough* check out my Etsy shop for abstract paintings *cough cough* ok shameless plug aside I really wanted to improve my watercolor skills. I had a genius idea of creating watercolor illustrations of the photos I took from my New York trip, so the past two weeks I decided to start.
I can honestly say that I’m 100% thrilled with how they turned out and I can tell my technique with watercolors is improving. Now could I tell you what the technique is? No absolutely not. To be honest I have no idea what I’m doing, I just hope I don’t mess up. Now if you ever take up watercolor, make sure everything dries before adding random colors next to each other to avoid a bleeding muddy color mess. Sadly it took more times than I would have liked to learn that lesson but it is nice when you notice that your hours of practice are starting to pay off, even if you are aggravated HA! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve yelled at the watercolor, yes that’s right at the watercolor.
I randomly decided to try and film a time lapse video while painting the Juliana’s Pizza piece. I figured if the piece turned out awful I just wouldn’t post it, thankfully I really liked the piece. Here is the link to the video if you want to check that out. I thought the time lapse looked cool so more of those will be coming your way in the future. I also thought about doing a Facebook live painting too, sounds fun but terrifying at the same time. Maybe I would do acrylic with that since I’m more comfortable with that medium rather than watercolor where basically crap can hit the fan with any slight twitch of the brush.
I have more New York photos to create in watercolor and my friend Amanda gave me the idea of doing some of Portland and San Fransisco as well. She’s a genius and I will definitely be working on those soon, but I want to do a few festive watercolors before Halloween is over so stay tuned on Instagram for those, you can follow me @allie.explores if you do not already. Let me know which piece is your favorite and if you would like to see these in my shop. I definitely think they would make great prints!
